St John’s Church Tunbridge Wells Brahms German Requiem (sung in English) Rachmaninov’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini

Saturday 9 February at 7.30pm

As 2013 dawns, members of Penshurst Choral Society are busily learning Brahms German Requiem for the first of three special concerts to mark half a century of music making on 9th February in St Johns Church Tunbridge Wells.

In 1963 a few locals began meeting in Penshurst Church. Today, over seventy singers from across a wide area rehearse weekly in Langton Green, under the baton of Dan Gillingwater, their entertaining and creative conductor.  Though at least one performance annually still takes place in the church, larger venues have been needed to accommodate the growing choir and its supporters.

Now one of Tunbridge Wells’ foremost amateur choirs, Penshurst Choral Society has had only four conductors, all of whom it is hoped will share in the celebrations during the year.  Past choir members are also invited to come and share their memories of singing in the choir.

The Choral Society is fortunate to have as their rehearsal accompanist Jong-Gyung Park – one of the leading pianists of her generation who has received numerous international awards and who frequently performs with the Choral Society.  She will open the first of the anniversary concerts with Rachmaninov’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini.

Research suggests that singing helps us forget our worries, reduces stress and gives us a natural “high”.  Most importantly it creates an opportunity for friendship and laughter – something members of Penshurst Choral Society can endorse after fifty years of singing and making music!
