Editorial style, Every day!

Happy New Year!…So the hangovers have worn off, the party season is over and it’s back to reality with a bump! Ok so January can be a little dull after all the bustle and excitement of Christmas and the New Year celebrations but this doesn’t mean your style has to follow suit. It’s amazing how just bringing a little detail and glamour to your look can make you feel great and ready for the day ahead!

First and foremost make sure your hair is well moisturized and in good condition. Dry and damaged hair will always make styling an issue. To give your hair that editorial edge one of the best tools you can use are hair straighteners. They are great for convenient and manageable styling, yet it surprises me how many people aren’t confident with how to use them properly. So here are a few tips on how to get anything from sleek straight hair to glamorous curls, yes straighteners can create both looks and are a lot more versatile than you think!

Technique – Using straighteners shouldn’t feel like a chore, used in the right way they provide a quick and easy way to style your hair. Always make sure your hair is bone dry and knot free before straightening. Apply a heat protection spray or moisturising cream over the hair to create a barrier from the heat of the straighteners. Don’t be tempted to work the irons through your hair as quickly as possible as this won’t allow the heat and the pressure applied by the iron plates to do their job resulting in you having to go over the same section of hair several times which stresses out the hair and damages it. Instead move the straighteners slowly through the hair in a continuous fluid motion.

Straighten – Use a comb to take sections of hair and work the straighteners from near the root area at a slow, even speed through to the ends of your hair, as you do so you can try to slightly bend the straighteners in an arc like motion inwards to give a slight bounce to the finished look as an alternative to the sleek poker straight look.

Curl – Curling your hair with straighteners means you can achieve a lovely elegant style and be in complete control of the curl. Work in sections, starting from the back, begin at the root with a section approx 2 inches wide. Close the irons over the hair then rotate the straighteners 180 degrees inwards and pull the irons through the hair. This will give a barrel curl effect that can either be left loose to create real volume, clipped up and pinned back to create a glamorous up do or alternatively use your fingers to loosen and separate the curl for more of a relaxed loose style.

Wave – Another great trick is to wave the hair with straighteners, this one does take a bit of time to master, but once you get it your hair can really turn heads. great for longer bobs and for those of you that want to re-create that ‘beachy’ tousled feel. Using the first steps from above, once you have the hair in the irons literally mimic an ‘S’ motion as you work the straighteners through. Experiment with the frequency of the ‘S’ for variations of style. For example a couple of large S shapes starting further down the hair can create a relaxed beach look wave.

To really show off these looks use a great quality finishing product. Shine sprays and moisture enhancing creams add that sophisticated sheen for sleek looks and loose curls where as a good hairspray will be your product of choice to hold those larger glamorous curls in place.
