Diary of a resourceful commuter

Exercise – the activity I would really love to be able to do on the train and can’t.

I suppose it would be impractical to have a carriage cleared of seats that could function as a gym carriage. They probably couldn’t cram as many people into that carriage. If there were a train gym, I imagine it would be more a ‘bring your own yoga mat’ rather than a swanky ‘we provide the towels’ type of place. And who in their right mind would obligingly lay down on the floor of a train, while sober?

No gym equipment would be available, which is probably for the best. Aside from the practical implications of trying to use treadmill or a rowing machine on a train, I think the concept of riding an exercise bike on a moving train sounds too much like a GCSE physics question – what speed are you really cycling at? Lots of exercises use balance as a basis to improve core strength. If only balancing nimbly on a lurching train offered the same benefits as balancing on a gym ball. The scrum of getting on and off the underground is often more akin to a boxercise class then one would wish, only in a very restricted space.

Even with the added sprint finish to actually catch the train each morning, I still don’t think this adds up to constitute genuine aerobic activity. Looks like I’ll have to cross exercise off of the list of how to make my commute more productive.
