The Rotary Club – Crowborough

The Rotary Club is an international organisation of men and women of like mind who all want to put something back into their community and also contribute to international charities in a variety of ways.

Being a member of Rotary is not just about raising money, although we do that when possible, but it is about having fun. We arrange many social events during the year such as a Race Night. Our race night is not the boring film version but we have real horses!! Well they are actually wooden and pulled on strings but participants race them as if they were real. We have barbecues, visits to places of interest, boating evenings and many more enjoyable pursuits. Members choose which activities to arrange so you can, with the agreement of the members, tailor Rotary to your own tastes. We enter the local carnivals each year and build our own floats.

Rotary was founded over 100 years ago as a business networking club and this is still part of Rotary life. Ethical practice is encouraged and, with members drawn from all walks of life, the opportunities to network are endless. If you join the Rotary organisation you will find that wherever you are, in the UK or abroad, apart from a small handful of countries, you will never be alone. You will have the right to visit any Rotary Club in the world and immediately be amongst people who may well become good friends. As a Rotarian you should never feel lonely wherever your travels take you..

Crowborough Rotary club has been going now for over 50 years and has contributed much to the local community during that time. If you enjoy helping others then connecting with Rotary gives you the chance to do something worthwhile. What is more, as a member of Rotary you will benefit from being part of a large internationally trusted organisation which is committed to ensuring that your efforts in helping local and overseas organisations are well organised, productive and rewarding. It should be mentioned at this stage that Rotarians don’t take any expenses from any money raised so unlike some charities you can be sure that 100% of all the money we raise is directly spent on the causes we support.

As an indication of the organisations we have helped in recent times the following examples will give you an idea of where the money we raise has been spent. Crowborough Community First Responders, Medequip 4 Kids, Crowborough Athletic Junior Football Club, Open Hands, a charity in Hadlow Down, Beacon Community College, Grove Park School and the Kent Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance. To list all the organisations we have helped would take up the rest of this page but suffice it to say that if you want to put something back into your community, then come and join us and we can help even more.

We meet at Barnsgate Manor Vineyard on the first and third Monday of the month at 6.45pm for 7.00pm and the meeting is usually over by 9.00pm. We have a simple two course meal followed by the speaker. Once every couple of months we have a business meeting where we discuss and decide how we run the club and what events we get involved in. When there are five Mondays in the month we invite our partners to join us. We have speakers who give us an insight into other people’s lives, into local organisations and occasionally local charities. Members select the speakers so they have a responsibility to make sure they are interesting!. Whilst we meet every other week attendance is not a strict rule. If you can only make a meeting once a month then that is fine by us. Most members find the meetings very interesting and so come regularly to meet with and be amongst friends.

If you think you would like to join an organisation that helps others, that gets involved in the local community and allows you to help to make the club enjoyable for all then please get in touch with us. You will be welcomed with open arms. For more information, please contact –Ray Jackson on 01892 852804 – email – rotary@rayjackson.com. We look forward to welcoming some new faces to ensure Crowborough Rotary continues as a thriving club benefiting the local community and the wider world.

Ray Jackson,
Community Service Chairman, Crowborough Rotary Club.
