2015 Poult Wood Golf Challenge Attracts New Players

After 29 weeks, 56 competition days, 460 rounds of golf and 13,540 points scores at an average of 29.4 points per round, the 2015 Poult Wood Challenge at Poult Wood Golf Course in Tonbridge, Kent has completed.

The course, which is operated by leisure trust tmactive on behalf of Tonbridge & Malling Borough Council, launched its first weekend Challenge to give members and non-members an opportunity to play every weekend in a regular group of players with the competition providing a purpose to the game. Non-members were able to attain a handicap and join in the groups, and the competition gave the golf professional staff a greater opportunity to engage with players and promote the course.

The Challenge ran each weekend between April and October. Golfers accumulated points each time they played (PGA Tour FedEx style) building up to a finals weekend. The 12 best combined rounds of Stableford scores for the season counted towards the players’ final position. Participants could play as often as they wanted and were required to play a minimum of three rounds to qualify for the finals weekend, which was held at the end of October.

The finals proved an exciting weekend with a tie for first place after 36 holes between Nick Workman and Martin Goodwin, who were both level on 80 Stableford points. A playoff ensued, which was won by Nick who was declared winner of the 2015 Poult Wood Challenge.

“I believe this type of initiative is key to engendering loyalty, creating camaraderie and above all increasing participation. It’s only our first year, but I think we’ve got a strong foundation to build on and will be able to grow the event next year,” said David Copsey, head golf professional at Poult Wood.

More than 15 golfers attained a handicap throughout the year and now play regularly at the course. All participants will be re-joining next year.

Following the success of the competition, the Pro Team is running a series of weekend team competitions throughout the winter, including Texas Scramble, Greensomes, Better Ball, Par’s your Friend and Yellow Ball.
