Update from the Commons

There has been absolutely no let up in the rain over the last month and we have simply been unable to anything to repair the ground around Brighton Lake. The area has improved to some degree on it’s own, so we have taken the fencing down. I think people can see how soggy some patches still are and I hope they will avoid those areas. In spite of this, I am delighted with the look of the lake itself now that it is full again.

We are starting to get into our winter work now, mostly trees. We have already had to deal with quite a few small trees that have suffered in the wind and rain but we now start to think about more strategic clearance. The first two planned are the clearance of holly at the top of the 101 Steps to expose a big sandstone outcrop there as well as a lovely oak tree, and secondly the re-opening of another section of the second Terrace Walk above Brighton Lake. We opened the section of this path from the garden centre to the path opposite Broadwater Lane a few years ago and this winter we will open the rest of the path through to it’s junction with the Terrace Walk.

After months of arguing with Morrison’s Utilities, we have finally got to a position where we can sort out the mess left by the gas works at the junction of Lower Green and Rusthall Rd. We will clear and grade the area and seed it with an appropriate grass mix although it is unlikely to germinate well at this time of year.

Worryingly, they are now digging up Tunbridge Wells Common alongside Eridge Rd; it never ends!
