Stylish Over Forty?

Is forty the new thirty? Are women looking fabulous well into middle age or do we look daft if we dress in high fashion? As a well over-forty year old, I love clothes and try to look good at all times. Should I be giving up and shuffling off in my slippers? I think not!

Whilst some budget brands can be poorly tailored and unforgiving, many high street stores cater for women of all ages these days. A wonderful boutique in my hometown sells dresses and separates that I adore (sadly, for my bank balance) but, also, many of them appeal to my cool and hip teenage daughter too.

Whilst I wouldn’t advocate skin tight or cropped tops with skinny jeans for the more mature ladies (unless you have a muscular midriff to die for), skinnies can look great at any age with a flattering longer top or tunic. Avoid sleeveless tops if you have bingo wings – and before you shout, I am not saying we all do at 40+! Nowadays, many older women still have figures to rival teenagers; obesity doesn’t go hand in hand with ageing.

Short skirts and low tops – are they inappropriate as the years pass us by? If you’ve got a great pair of pins, go for it! A tiny tight mini skirt that barely covers your bottom may not be flattering, but you can still look fantastic with skirts well above the knee! Keep it classy with colours that suit you, rather than choosing whatever is in high fashion. A low cut top worn with good quality lingerie underneath can look great on an older cleavage; consider a well chosen piece of jewellery to cover any signs of ageing.

You can still be quirky as you mature. Greying hair is a choice, not a necessity – if you choose to colour it anyway, why not add a few rebellious brighter streaks? Show them you still have some attitude! Consult your hairdresser to find out which tones will suit you and flatter your skin tones.

Be proud to be a gorgeous grown up woman!
